Things To Know. Impressive water views and gorgeous course. Luke was a great caddy, he made the day. Be aware that if it rains all the tee times get delayed and nobody from the course bothered to contact us to inform us our tee time was going to be delayed by 2.
The land was a former army base that had operated as an anti-aircraft weapons firing range during World War II. Though the property was an ecological ruin filled with asbestos, toxic waste, concrete bunkers and fuel storage tanks, it also featured foot bluffs rising above the waters of Lake Michigan.
By the time Pete Dye was done conjuring the flat landscape, employing forty years of cunning and experience, an armada of earth movers, and 13, truckloads of sand imported from area farms, the wondrous creation was still hard by the shores of Lake Michigan.
But it looked as if it were sitting on top of the Irish Sea. To heighten the Eire illusion, Kohler imported a flock of blackface sheep that roam the golf grounds along the lakeshore unencumbered, adding a uniquely appealing touch.
He also decreed the course would be walking only—carts would be about as welcome on property as waterfalls, spurting fountains, and lovingly-tended flowerbeds.

Hole 4. Approach shots require a middle to long iron into a slightly elevated green that hangs on the edge of lake bluffs. The right-center portion of the green is the smart target, with par not only a good score, but may often be good enough to win the hole in these matches.
Hole 5. With a sharp S-shaped fairway, water runs along both the left and right sides. Anyone brave enough to try hitting their second shot to the green will be challenged by a long carry over water to a shallow green with no room for error short or left.
The more conservative approach is to lay up down the fairway with a mid to long iron, leaving a more straight-on approach with a short iron. Hole 6.
If the tees are up and the hole location is on the left half of the putting surface, players will try driving the green with a cut shot that will follow a slope to the right.
If the tees are back or the hole location is right, the smart play is a long iron for position and a short iron for accuracy.
Either way, missing the green short or right leaves a difficult up-and-down from deep pot bunkers and fescue rough.
Even though this hole comes early in the match, what happens here could have a significant impact on the outcome and will certainly be an exciting hole to view.
Hole 7. Besides the lake, this green is protected by bunkers all around the green, below the hole on the right and on a hillside to the left.
Hole 8. The second shot is played with the water as a backdrop: A long iron may be required to reach a green guarded on the left by dunes and bunkers, and on the right by deep bunkers with a fall off to the lake.
The green is long and deep, putting extra pressure on club selection to ensure finding the correct portion of the putting surface.
